General FAQ
I need legal advice. Can PLEIS-NB recommend a good lawyer?
We cannot recommend a specific lawyer or law firm. The PLEIS-NB booklet – You and Your Lawyer offers some suggestions on how to find lawyer and information on how to get the most out of your first appointment.
If you want to talk to a lawyer but don't know any, ask your friends, neighbours, clergy member or anyone else you trust, to suggest a lawyer. Ask friends who have had a similar type of legal problem. It is important to choose the right lawyer for your legal problem. The best references generally are other people who have used that lawyer.
You can also look in the Yellow Pages of the telephone directory, under "Lawyers". Lawyers and law firms in your community are listed in alphabetical order. Some directories also give lawyers the option to list their contact information under the area of law they practice.
Also, on its website, the Law Society of New Brunswick offers a list of lawyers licensed to practice in N.B. Look under “Member Directory” on the navigation bar. You can check a lawyer’s status or search for a lawyer by city. The Law Society also offers information on how to file a complaint about a lawyer’s conduct and how to have a lawyer’s bill reviewed. Its staff cannot give legal advice, represent you or help you sue a lawyer. Check out the website at: www.lawsociety-barreau.nb.ca.
